Enough is enough.

That is the thoughts of some Menomonie City Council members regarding places to buy liquor.

Others say if there is a license available it should be used to help attract and retain business to the community.

It was pointed out Monday that Wisconsin has one beer license for every 374 patrons versus other states that have one for every 1,300.

"I think we've got enough and we don't need anymore," said Alderman Brian Gabriel.

Alderman Pat Brogan noted many of the recent restaurants that have located to the downtown have liquor licenses. Bu tthey have been good, responsible owners with businesses that help attract people to the downtown, he noted.

The liquor license available is for off sale use only, noted Alderman Ed Smith.

The City Council will address the issue next month on whether to consider issuing the license or not.

Alderman Sandy White said she did not want to see a deck of cards used to determine which business got the license, like in the past, if the council does decide to issue the liquor license. She felt that was not the proper way to make a decision based on luck of the draw.

Liquor took center stage at the City Council meeting Monday.

The council discussed implementing an ordinance requiring servers of alcoholic beverages to not be intoxicated themselves.

Other possible future ideas White has listed to encourage responsible drinking, but the council has not discussed, include implementing a public intoxication ordinance, a social host ordinance, and establishing an alcohol licensing review committee.

Other ideas include coding police and fire department calls that involve alcohol-related activities, the density of establishments selling alcohol, reducing high risk drink specials such as all you can drink, placing surveillance cameras on Main and Broadway Streets and requiring the registration of kegs.
